A YOUNG farmer who hasn't had more than a week's holiday in the last six years is to travel the world.

Tom Rawson, who works on his family's farm in Thornhill, near Dewsbury, is taking a 10-week, Yorkshire Agricultural Society-funded trip to California, Australia and New Zealand.

Tom, 26, will be studying cows, how they are looked after and how often they should be milked.

"I'm very excited. It's the chance of a lifetime," said Tom.

Tom helps his family run Thornhill Hall Farm, which they have owned for the last 14 years.

The farm is likely to switch to once a day milking soon and this radical change from twice a day is what Tom will study during his trip.

Nigel Pulling, chief executive of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society said: "Tom is a worthy winner of this scholarship.

"His topic is highly relevant and I am sure his studies will be of great interest to fellow dairymen."
