A MEMBER of Huddersfield Canal Society is to play a key role in protecting Britain’s waterways.

Graham Birch is one of the new trustees of a Waterways Partnership, part of the Canals and River Trust which this week replaces British Waterways to run the canal network.

The partnership will be made up of a range of people representing different waterways interests – such as boaters, walkers, cyclists and anglers – and people with relevant expertise in areas like volunteering, fundraising, environment, heritage and community engagement.

Mr Birch was involved in the Millennium Lottery funded projects to restore both the Huddersfield and Rochdale Canals.

Since his retirement from Oldham Council in 2010 he has become an active member of the Huddersfield Canal Society and played a leading role in organising the society’s celebration of the canal’s bicentenary in 2011 and has recently taken over as editor of the society’s magazine Pennine Link.
