TOP band The Proclaimers are coming to Holmfirth.

And the Scottish duo’s tour forms part of their 25 year anniversary celebrations.

With bands coming and going, The Proclaimers duo Craig and Charlie Reid have continued to sell out venues and appear at some of the UK’s biggest festivals.

In August they’ll play at the Holmfirth Picturedrome ahead of a 28-date UK tour with their new album, Like Comedy.

It comes after they teamed up with comedy legend Matt Lucas earlier this year for an unusual video for the song Spinning Around In The Air.

Speaking to the Examiner, Craig Reid said: “We last played in Holmfirth in 2010 and enjoyed it. It’s a great venue and we can’t wait to come back.”

The Proclaimers took a break from touring while they were in the studio working on Live Comedy, and they’re glad to be back on the road: “We started gigging again last weekend with three shows and the week before when we were in rehearsals we couldn’t wait to get in front of an audience.”

Hits including I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) and Letter From America sit alongside new releases.

“We’re doing about four songs from the new album, but there’s nine albums of songs to choose from and we do like to vary the set list,” Craig added.

“There are seven or eight songs we have to play each night, but we’re on stage for an hour and a half and often play about 23 songs, so we mix it up.”

The 2012 tour marks 25 years since the band first put out a record and Craig says playing live has kept them going.

“Sometimes it feels like five years and sometimes 50,” he said.

“I think if we knew what we know now back then there would have been less pressure, but back in the early days we just wanted to put a record out.

“We didn’t think ahead.

“I think having two or three big hits down the years has kept us alive, but playing to live audiences is what it’s all about.

“We enjoy it and I think our audiences know that.

“We’ve now get three generations of fans coming to the shows and doing festivals during the summer introduces us to a new audience, but we still have people coming to see us who were with us at the beginning.”

Earlier this year The Proclaimers joined forces with Little Britain star Matt Lucas, who made his director’s debut for a song from their latest album.

Craig explained: “Matt’s a very talented guy and we sat down with him and he talked us through the idea of shooting the video in a bungalow with two old ladies.

“At the second draft he threw into the mix that me and Charlie would play the two old ladies.

“We thought about it and just went for it, it was a good laugh, I think I looked a bit better than Charlie did as an old lady, but Charlie would probably think he looked better.”

This year also sees the movie version of the musical Sunshine On Leith featuring songs by Craig and Charlie.

The Proclaimers play Holmfirth Picturedrome on August 25 and the York Grand Opera House on October 22, Salford The Lowry on October 29 and St Georges Hall, Bradford on November 10. They’re also playing at the Hebridean and Big Tent festivals in Scotland,Cambridge Folk Festival and main-stage appearances at the V Festivals.
