KIRKLEES Council's Tory group leader is bidding to become an MP.

Clr Robert Light, 40, who represents Birstall and Birkenshaw, has started his quest to become the next MP for the Batley and Spen constituency.

The seat is held by Labour MP Mike Wood who has a majority of just over 5,000.

Dad-of-three Mr Light is the Conservative Parliamentary spokesman for Batley and Spen and in the 1997 General Election finished second behind Alice Mahon in Halifax.

Mr Light was the youngest Conservative councillor in the country at 22 when elected in 1987.

He is also the first non-Labour chairman of West Yorkshire Fire Authority since it was founded in 1986.

He said:

"I believe the people of Batley and Spen should be entitled to see more police on the streets and should not live in fear of crime.

"I believe MPs should speak up in the House of Commons for their constituents."
