A 'FREEBIE' weekend organised by West Yorkshire Fire Authority has been shelved after Tory councillors slammed the idea as ridulous.

The Fire Authority planned a free weekend in an upmarket Leeds hotel for 22 councillors on the authority's board later this month.

But Clr Robert Light, leader of Kirklees Council's Conservative group, said Tories would boycott the event.

He said the arrangements were an insult to firefighters who had had to fight long and hard for a pay rise.

Clr Harry Fox, chairman of the Fire Authority and a Labour councillor on Kirklees Council, said an all-party executive had now decided not to go head, mainly due to the Tory boycott.

But he described the Tories' attitude as "bizarre and irresponsible."

"The purpose of this weekend was to address important issues which will affect the fire service over the next few years," he said.

Some of the issues will now be discussed at the authority's budget meeting on February 20.
