THE Conservatives will put 1,544 more police on the streets of West Yorkshire if elected, they claim.

And they believe that more burglars should be jailed for their crimes.

Amanda Harland, Conservative Parliamentary spokes- woman for the Colne Valley, said almost 70,000 burglaries were committed in West Yorkshire last year. But only 873 of the 1,598 offenders brought to justice were jailed for their crimes.

She said: "Burglary is a serious crime which causes great distress for its victims, yet I am extremely concerned that only a fraction of burglars are ever caught and brought to justice.

"Prison has an important part to play in warning potential burglars that crime does not pay.

"I am calling on the Government to implement the Conservative policies of placing 1,544 more police officers on the streets of West Yorkshire, of stopping the conveyor belt to crime by introducing another 20,000 nationwide drug rehabilitation places and of restoring the deterrent threat of prison."
