A TORY election campaign got off on the wrong foot ... when the train carrying party chairman Francis Maude broke down.
He was absent for the Huddersfield launch - and so was Kirklees Council Tory group leader Robert Light, who had gone to meet him.
Tories insisted they are on course to overtake the Liberal Democrats as largest party on the council.
Clr Light said in a prepared statement: "Our campaign launch for the election comes at a time of great optimism in the Conservative Party, both nationally and locally.
"I personally believe that our local councillors and candidates will have a successful election, because they are excellent candidates backed up by excellent policies."
Conservatives have 22 seats on the hung council, just two fewer than the Lib-Dems.
Voters go to the polls on May 4 to decide on the make-up of the council .
