A CALL was made today for a memorial to Lord Hanson to be created in Huddersfield.

The life peer, who died on Monday at the age of 82, was regarded as one of Huddersfield's most notable sons.

And Kirklees Council Conservative leader Clr Robert Light has called on the authority to honour Lord Hanson by commissioning a statue as it did for another famous son Lord Wilson, the former Prime Minister.

The Tory Leader said that Lord Hanson had done far more for the economies of Britain, and Huddersfield, than Lord Wilson, a rare visitor to the town after he became an MP, had ever done.

Hanson, who was 82, headed the conglomerate that bore his name. At one point it employed 90,000 people.

Clr Light said: "Under the Liberal Democrats this Council has become more politically correct than any other in Yorkshire.

"If it is to continue to show its commitment to equality it will surely erect a statue to Lord Hanson, arguably Huddersfield's most famous son, in a prominent public place.

"There can be no question Lord Hanson contributed far more to the local economy than Wilson ever did."
