SECURITY cameras should be installed on Brighouse town centre to help the fight against crime and disorder, says a councillor.

The call came from Tory Nick Yates, who said CCTV was sorely needed.

He said the town was becoming known as Dodge City because of the fighting and lawlessness that took place.

"We had a mini-riot at a weekend not long ago," he added.

"There is regular street fighting, drug and alcohol abuse.

"Brighouse is the second largest town in Calderdale and we are the biggest contributor financially. Yet we seem to get very little back."

Clr Yates said he and fellow councillors were to visit the base of the Huddersfield CCTV network at Fartown to see how it worked.

They would then be examining potential income schemes.

He believed that each camera cost about £6,000, with start-up costs of about £25,000.
