A FIRST-TIME trip abroad by a holidaymaker will be tinged with sadness.

Jane Singleton has received the prize of a week's holiday for six people in a villa in Pollensa, northern Majorca, from a Kirkwood Hospice balloon race which raised £3,000.

Her best friend, Susan Hart, of Bradley bought the winning balloon while she was a patient there. But she died before the winner was announced.

"Susan's husband, Stephen, wanted Jane to have the prize because she had visited Susan regularly while she was a patient," said Kate Leadbeater, of the hospice's fundraising team.

The holiday was given by St Peter's Street travel agents Air Parade Travel.

The winning balloon reached Headley Hill Farm in Northumberland.
