Tour de France fever ripped across a Huddersfield primary school when a Tour de France legend stopped by.

Mirfield resident Brian Robinson, who is best known for being the first Briton to win a stage in the world-renowned race, was the guest of honour at Lepton Junior School when he spoke at a special school assembly.

Lucky pupils were the only ones in the entire region to receive a visit by the cycling great, who first rose to fame in 1955 when he was selected to take part in the race after training for years with the Huddersfield Road Club.

The talk, which was given to all pupils in the school, was made possible thanks to one of the pupil’s parents and was organised by PE co-ordinator, Jo Land and was the latest high profile event to take place in the lead up to the Grand Depart, which will pass through Huddersfield this Sunday

She said: “It was a fantastic assembly and the children loved it because he’s such a legend.

“Brian told us about his experiences in the Tour de France and how he became inspired to start riding.

“He emphasised the enjoyment he gets from being on his bike and told the children how much he loved the surrounding countryside.

No roads remained untraversed by Brian during his career and he could regularly be seen riding around the Holme Valley and North Huddersfield with the club form the age of 18.

However, it was not until he was 18 when he was first allowed to race, due to the refusal of his dad.

Jo added: “It was also mentioned that although in his 80s he still goes on bike rides of up to 50 miles a day, which is incredible.

“He really encouraged the kids to get involved with cycling and to go and see the race at the weekend and I think that more will definitely go now, thanks to him.

“We were so pleased that he agreed to come and speak to the children and they all felt really special afterwards.”
