STREETS in the town centre will be closed off on Saturday for Huddersfield Carnival.

The annual event will include a procession from the Hudawi Centre to St George’s Square, where the main attractions take place from 1pm.

West Yorkshire Police and Kirklees Council’s Highways team will close some roads in the town centre to allow the event to take place safely.

Drivers are advised to consider alternative routes in and around the town centre and to allow plenty of time to reach their destinations.

The following streets will be closed from 7am to 11.59pm:

Station Street, from Westgate to Railway Street, Railway Street, from Westgate to John William Street, St George’s Square access road in front of George Hotel, St Peter’s Street, from Byram Street to Station Street, Byram Street, from Kirkgate to Northumberland Street, Church Street, from Byram Street to John William Street.

Great Northern Street, from Lower Fitzwilliam Street to Ray Street will be closed from 8am to 6pm.

John William Street, from Northumberland Street to St Peter’s Street, will be closed from 11am to 11.59pm.

The following roads will be closed as the procession passes through and will be opened again once the parade has passed and it is safe to do so – between 1pm and 6pm:

Great Northern Street – Lower Fitzwilliam Street to Hill House Lane

Hill House Lane, Leeds Road to Willow Lane East, Willow Lane East Alder Street to Bradford Road, Willow Lane – Bradford Road to St John’s Road, St Johns Road – Osbourne Road to Castlegate, John William Street, Castlegate to Westgate

Market Place – Westgate to Cloth Hall Street, Cloth Hall Street – Market Place to Market Street, Railway Street – Westgate to John William Street, Westgate/Kirkgate – New North Parade to Cross Church Street, Market Street – High Street to Westgate.
