THE Huddersfield courts system is looking to recruit new magistrates.
The Huddersfield Bench has 110 magistrates responsible for judging criminal cases.
About 97% of all crimes are dealt with by magistrates, who have powers ranging from imposing fines and custodial orders to Crown Court referrals for more serious matters.
No legal background is required as training is provided, but volunteers should be under 70, reliable, socially aware and of good character.
Magistrates are unpaid but can claim for loss of earnings.
To apply people should visit www.direct.gov.uk/magistrates for an application form, or call Elizabeth Martin on 01484 423552 (ext 258) or email to email@example.com
Completed forms should be returned to the Huddersfield Advisory Committee, The Court House, Civic Centre, Huddersfield HD1 2NH by October 3.
