HUDDERSFIELD Town fans have joined the campaign to Save The Albert.

For their beloved club was founded after an historic meeting in the Huddersfield town centre pub - now shut and forlorn.

But there is hope, as Kirklees Council has received a planning application for the pub, which shut down suddenly last month.

The plan is for new signs and awnings, giving hope that the popular pub will continue in business.

But campaigners fear its historic interior, with glass and carved wood, could vanish.

It was on June 25, 1908, that a packed meeting in the Victoria Lane pub saw the official founding of Huddersfield Town.

The Terriers' forefathers are said to have gathered round a table while sipping their ale to put pen to paper.

And now one life-long Town fan wants supporters to get behind the pub.

Stan Frontczak, of Crosland Moor, is urging the club to get involved as well.

The 41-year-old season ticket holder said: "This is a very important piece of our history and the pub needs to be saved.

"It is almost 100 years since the agreement was signed and it would be very sad to see the Albert go or become a wine bar.

"It was an oasis of calm in the busy town centre. It should be kept that way."

Mr Frontczak also suggests that more should be made of the pub's connection with Town.

He said: "It would be lovely to have a plaque up marking the spot where the club was born, or even some kind of little museum.

"The George Hotel has a similar thing for the Rugby League and I think it would be great at the Albert.

"There is quite a bit of space used as function rooms upstairs. Maybe there could be a history of the club up there. I am sure people would enjoy that."

show new lit signs outside the pub, suggesting that it is set to re-open.

Enterprise Inns, who own the pub, have refused to comment.

A spokesman from Huddersfield Town said it was important the heritage was saved.

He added: "We hope the Albert pub is saved. We hope as many people as possible get behind the campaign.

"This building has a very important place in Town's history."

A decision about the proposed new signs for the pub will be made on February 15.
