THE main entrance to Huddersfield Town Hall may be moved, so that disabled people can get in.

Civic leaders are considering the move after heritage watchdogs refused to allow alterations to the existing main door in Ramsden Street.

It is at the top of a flight of steep stairs and does not comply with new disability regulations.

But English Heritage has slapped a ban on alterations because the town hall is a listed building.

Now, proposals have been unveiled to use the door at the Corporation Street side as the principal entry.

A £240,000 scheme has been prepared to make the changes needed, including the widening of corridors.

A Kirklees Council report said it was the only option adding: "With the exception of Corporation Street, all other entrances into the town hall have steps."

More than 190,000 people used the town hall last year, including 30,000 who made inquiries at the Ramsden Street reception desk.

Surveys show five or six disabled visitors need help each day to get in. The figure does not include requests made during evenings and weekends.

Work could begin next August.

A future plan could see a canopy put up at the Corporation Street entrance and a replacement lift on the Ramsden Street side of the building.
