HORROR came to Huddersfield town centre with what was claimed to be Britain’s biggest zombie walk.

Halloween came early as ghouls of all shapes and sizes spooked shoppers when they ‘rose from the dead’ to take part in the town’s second Zombie Slouch.

Around 70 people donned their scariest costumes and make-up to take part in the charity event, which this year raised around £150 for homeless charity Shelter.

Starting off at St George’s Square, the gory procession weaved its way through town, freaking out some shoppers, but posing for photographs with others on their way.

The walk, organised with Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership, was followed by a zombie-themed party with horror films and live music at The Parish pub.

The first slouch was held in the town last year in aid of Friends of the Earth.

The walk was the brainchild of organiser Simon Skelling, who got the idea from America, where the marches are a popular event.

Mr Skelling, a Kirklees education and outreach officer, said he was delighted with how well this year’s event was supported.

He said: “It’s been fantastically well supported this year. Ours is the most successful in Britain and nothing can be compared to it because, although there are a few smaller events, ours is the only big organised walk.

“A lot more people in the town were aware of it this year and the response from people coming out of shops and taking pictures was great.

“We had around 70 people taking part and people made a lot more effort this year with their costumes. We had all sorts of characters, from people in doctors and nurses outfits and pyjamas to businessmen in bowler hats!”

Those who made an extra special effort won prizes, including accolades for Most Original Zombie and Most Adorable Zombie Couple.

Mr Skelling said that this year’s slouch had a great response from shoppers who lined the streets to watch the gruesome parade.

“I was very impressed with the turnout from members of the public as well as those who rook part.”
