MIRFIELD will celebrate all things English with a parade through the town on St George's Day.

Town councillors voted last week in favour of the event to be held on Saturday, April 23.

There will be a parade through the town and a short service at Trinity Methodist Church, at Huddersfield Road.

Mirfield Mayor Clr Martyn Bolt said he was delighted the town was set to buck the trend of England not celebrating St George's Day.

He said: "We are more likely to celebrate St Patrick's Day than our own, which seems a bit sad to me.

"So this year we decided we wanted to do something to mark the day in Mirfield.

"Many people are afraid of some of the connotations that go along with being proud to be English, but we should not be ashamed.

"We want to take the flag back and let people be proud again."

The parade will start at Ings Grove Park at 11am.
