HUDDERSFIELD can now boast the UK’s largest cheerleading squad.

The town is leading the way with more than 200 cheerleaders in training at The Zone.

And many of them are in action at the Galpharm Stadium each week.

The girls, aged from three to 40, have been performing to Huddersfield Town and Giants fans each week.

Coach Zoe Prince said the town was now the home to the biggest cheer squad in the UK.

She said: “In January we had about 50 people, but we have been growing since we moved into The Zone, off St Andrew’s Road, and we now have more than 200 members.

“I think the reason it is becoming so popular is because it is a new discipline to the UK that people haven’t had the chance to try before.

“It’s a great way to keep fit, it’s very different to anything else and I think people enjoy it so much because it is fun.”

Zoe has been cheerleading for 11 years and says she is delighted more people are trying it out.

“When the National Cheerleaders Association was founded in 1948, cheerleading was really a sideline attraction to keep the crowd engaged and entertained when the team wasn’t doing well.

“But now we perform before matches at the Galpharm Stadium and at half-time.

“The girls really enjoy it too.”

The Zone sports complex has dance studios where the cheerleaders practice each week.
