RAIL passengers could benefit from longer platforms at Huddersfield’s station.

Network Rail is considering “additional platform capacity” at the station to deal with the growing number of passengers.

The proposal is part of a £60m package to improve the rail system in Yorkshire.

Other plans include improvements to stations in Leeds, Horsforth and Keighley.

Some 2.7m people use Huddersfield station each year.

Kirklees councillor Andrew Pinnock says the spending should be a priority.

He said: “Continued under-investment in rail infrastructure has gone on for years.

“Somehow the Government has got to be lobbied exceedingly hard so that as much investment goes into rail as into the roads.”
