THE body of a woman has been found in Brighouse town centre.

The tragic discovery was made yesterday morning and led to high police activity.

Brighouse police say they were called to an area of woodland at the rear of Wellholme Park after receiving concerns about the safety of a woman.

Her body was then discovered in the woodland area between Clifton Common and the park at 10.10am.

Police closed off the grassy area off Clifton Road and set up an investigation scene near to the Tesco supermarket, which borders the site.

Mary Martin, 68, of Clifton Common, said: “All of a sudden there were lots of police cars.

“One of my neighbours said they’d heard shouting a bit before, but it’s so sad what’s happened.

“The police were very good in telling us it wasn’t suspicious, otherwise I think people might have worried.

“It’s awful for the lady’s family.”

Neil Harper and wife Tracey were shopping at Tesco, Brighouse, and saw the incident scene.

“They asked us if we’d been there earlier and saw or knew anything – they were stopping a few shoppers as part of their enquiries.

“It’s an awful thing to happen in the middle of the town, but it seems the police handled it quickly so a dog walker didn’t come across the body. A lot of people use the common for walking and running.”

An ambulance crew was called to the scene but it was too late to revive the woman.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances but early indications are that this is not suspicious.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Halifax CID on 101.
