ANCIENT Japanese martial arts can be learned in Mirfield.

Shoufukan Dojo and Mirfield Community Trust, is offering young people a 10 week taster course on Samurai martial art.

It starts next Monday at the Mirfield Community Centre, Water Royd Lane.

The course aims to give young men and women an insight into how the training methods and techniques of the ancient Samurai are relevant to tackling the challenges of modern life.

Activities will include hands on sessions, demonstrations and a chance to try out basic self-defence techniques.

“This is a great opportunity to get a taste of what a classical tradition like Takeuchi-ryu is all about,” said instructor Anna Seabourne.

No experience or equipment are necessary but participants must wear something comfortable. The course is free to young people in Kirklees and is on Mondays, 7.30-9.30pm.

A student from the first course which ended in June has joined the main dojo for students of Japanese martial arts. Fifteen-year-old Connor Brannan will be part of a group performing for the Japanese Ambassador at Japan Day in Manchester on Sunday.
