A station worker gave commuters a big surprise at Huddersfield train station.

Ticket office clerk Amanda Wasp took centre stage in the foyer when she undertook a charity head shave for MacMillan Cancer Support.

None of Amanda’s striking red shoulder-length locks survived the blades as part of a bid to raise £1,000 for the charity.

She did it in honour of her 52-year-old sister Annette Davis, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Amanda, 46, collected donations in a bucket while being sheared by Oliver Thomas from Hairhaus based nearby on Northumberland Street.

“I found it actually embarrassing at first and I was a bit nervous because there were a lot of people watching”, she said.

“But then I settled into it and Ollie from Hairhaus did a good job.”

It is a big change for Amanda, who has treasured her long hair for decades.

“The last time I had it cut short was when I was 15 so it feels really strange now,” she said.

“I feel really good about it.

“I don’t feel too cold but I think I may have to buy a hat.”

Amanda added: “I’d like to raise £1,000 and I’ve got £600 on my sponsorship form already.

“Customers have been really good and we’re just waiting to see how much I’ve collected while having my head shaved.”
