A TRAIN operator running express services through Huddersfield has one of the worst punctuality records in the country.

Nearly a third of TransPennine Express trains ran late in the final three months of last year, say Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) figures.

The First services include expresses on the busy Leeds-Huddersfield- Manchester line.

Transpennine's 68% punctuality compares with the national average of 80.3% - 3.9% up on the same period in 2003.

There was better news from other companies - including Northern Rail, which took over services from First North Western and Arriva Trains Northern on December 12. It recorded a figure of 82.3% of trains on time.

Its services include local trains from Huddersfield to Leeds, Manchester, Halifax, Bradford, Sheffield and Wakefield.

SRA chairman David Quarmby said: "This is the second successive year of significantly improved performance during the very difficult autumn quarter."
