PASSENGERS using Trans-Pennine Express trains are getting a better service.

New figures show that First TransPennine Express had the biggest improvement in punctuality of any train service in the UK.

Services on the line – which runs dozens of services through Huddersfield each week – ran on time nine times out of 10.

Across the country, rail punctuality reached record autumn levels in the weeks before recent storms.

Figures showed 90.2% of trains ran on time in the period October 18 to November 14 – the first time a 90% figure has been recorded in an autumnal four-week period, Network Rail (NR) announced.

The figure compared with 87.6% for the same period in 2008.

The best performer this autumn was Merseyrail, which ran 96.4% of trains on time.

The First TransPennine Express performance was 8%, up at 91.3%.

A spokesman for the company said: “We are delighted with the results of the study as our staff do all they can to deliver the best possible service to our passengers.

“We will continue to strive to improve still further.”

The worst-performing company was London commuter service operator First Capital Connect (FCC), which has had to introduce a reduced timetable due to driver shortages. Punctuality slipped from 88.0% in autumn 2008 to 86.8%.
