DRIVERS had a lucky escape when a transporter lorry overturned on the M1, shedding cars on to both carriageways and smashing a crash barrier.

Nine cars fell off the back of the transporter when the vehicle tipped over on the northbound carriageway close to junction 39 near Horbury, Wakefield, at around 10.25am yesterday.

Some of the cars carried on the transporter ended up in the southbound carriageway where one lane was closed following the accident so the central reservation crash barrier could be repaired.

Another car slipped down the embankment.

The southbound carriageway opened later, but northbound was closed for most of the day between junctions 39 and 38, near West Bretton.
