ONE driver was badly hurt in a two-car crash in a Huddersfield street.

An Alfa Romeo 147 and a Honda Accord crashed head-on at a bend on Heaton Road in Paddock at 3.20pm yesterday.

The Alfa was travelling from Paddock towards Gledholt and the force of the impact was so bad it spun totally around to face the other way.

The driver was trapped inside the badly damaged hatchback.

Firefighters from Huddersfield and Slaithwaite had to cut the door off to free him.

He had suffered a serious head injury and was semi-conscious at the scene.

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he is now in a stable condition.

The Honda driver, a middle-aged man, suffered chest injuries and whiplash, but was not badly hurt.

The road was closed off while police accident experts carried out an investigation at the scene.

Police have appealed for witnesses who saw either of the blue cars just before the accident to contact them.
