A MAN jumped from a first-floor window after a fire trapped him upstairs at his home.

Police and fire investigation experts are probing how the blaze began at the house on Moorside Avenue, Westborough, Dewsbury, at 5.55am today.

The man, in his mid-30s, suffered cuts and bruises.

Leading Firefighter Richard Taylor, of Dewsbury fire station, said: "The source of the fire is under investigation and is believed to be suspicious.

"The hallway and stairs were gutted and the rest of the house was badly damaged by smoke."

Firefighters also saved the man's dog, which was suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

"A firefighter carried the dog from the house," said Leading Firefighter Taylor. "And when it came round it bit him."
