A NEW project aims to give people in Slaithwaite up-to-date travel information.

The Rail and River Centre, underneath Slaithwaite Civic Hall, aims to promote information about buses, trains, walking and cycling in the area.

Staff at the centre - which incorporates a shop - also want to listen to people's views on public transport and information.

Project worker Jean Margetts will be out and about in the community promoting the centre, which has been paid for by the Community Chest Fund from Voluntary Action Kirklees.

Paul Stevenson, volunteer shop manager, said: "The centre provides information on public transport, local attractions, maps, walks, photocopying and faxing."

The shop is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

But Mr Stevenson said if more volunteers came forward it could open more often.

The centre's phone number is 01484 847790.
