A HUDDERSFIELD coach and taxi operator has been jailed in France.

Paul Singh - also known as Gurpal Singh Chahal - was arrested at Calais with several illegal immigrants on board his bus.

He was convicted by a French court and is now serving a sentence in a French jail.

Singh, who was 48 on New Year's Day, was arrested in Calais on November 8.

He was detained after customs officers became suspicious about people who were in the vehicle with him.

He was detained in custody until his trial on December 6.

Then he was convicted of assisting the illegal entry of foreign nationals and jailed for 10 months.

Singh runs two companies in Huddersfield - coach firm Paul's Travel and taxi company Streamlined Taxis.

His businesses are based in the former bus depot on St John's Road, Huddersfield.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of this case and are providing appropriate consular assistance."

Nobody from Paul's Travel or Streamlined Taxis wished to comment today.
