Dozens of people left touching messages in memory of Mr Brook, who worked at Brooksbank School in Elland.

He was fondly known by several nicknames including Brooky, Shady, Mike and Mark.

Pedestrian Mr Brook, who lived in Elland, lost his life after he was struck by a lorry while walking down Elland Road on January 13.

Denise Gledhill, of Elland, a former student who was taught by Mr Brook in between 1991 to 1996, expressed her sadness at his shock death.

Denise, 34, said: “He was a great teacher and a genuinely nice person. I couldn’t believe what happened to him and was very shocked – it’s such a sad loss.”

Another pupil, Sarah Dyas, 38, commented on Facebook: “Rest in peace, Mr Brook, what a lovely teacher.

“He was the best maths teacher I ever had and I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family.”

A spokeswoman from the school in Foxley Lane said that Mr Brook left there more than 10 years ago.

He was originally from Queensbury in Bradford.

His funeral will take place at Park Wood Crematorium on Monday February 2 at 11.15am and donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.

So far no one has been arrested in connection with Mr Brook’s death, which happened when a blue Mercedes lorry struck him on the road between the Casa Hotel and the White Rose Water Ski Club at around 2.05pm.

Emergency services attended the scene but Mr Brook had suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead.
