A LEPTON man has died in a river tragedy in Kent.

Andrew Fernando, 48, was reported missing by friends on July 19 but four days later his body was found in the River Medway in Tunbridge.

Police are not treating his death as suspicious.

Falklands veteran Mr Fernando had served in the Navy with Prince Andrew on HMS Brazen and also HMS Sheffield.

He had been living in South East London and was due to attend a military vehicle show in Kent as a guest of an exhibitor when concerns were raised regarding his welfare.

A spokesman for The War and Peace Show said: “Organisers were made aware that event attendee Andy Fernando had not been seen by his friends since Wednesday, July 18. Kent Police were immediately contacted and a missing person investigation was launched.

“The event team worked closely with police to instigate a full search of the extensive showground.

“Sadly on Monday, July 23, police confirmed that they had found a body, which was formally identified as missing Andy Fernando.”

A Kent police spokesman confirmed an inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday .

Mr Fernando’s parents, who still live in Lepton, were too upset to speak at this time.

His brother, Jimmy, lives in London and said that Andrew was very well known in Huddersfield and had lots of friends.

Tributes were left on Facebook by dozens of friends and Mr Fernando’s sister Nicola posted: “I just wanted to thank everyone for your kind thoughts and words. I will pass on your regards to the rest of his family.’’

Kelly Whelan posted: “Cannot believe this has happened to our lovely jolly next door neighbour. Andy, you were a lovely man – will miss our little chats. God bless you mate xx

Former colleague Phil Murray posted: “I worked with Andy for the past two and half years. He took the time to show me the ropes when I started. He was the nicest guy ever and such a laugh. I have some really fond memories of him”.
