MORE people have come forward to pay tribute to shopkeeper Gurmail Singh, who died after a robbery at his shop.

Mr Singh, 63, suffered fatal injuries in a raid on February 20 at the shop in Cowcliffe that his family have run for many years.

Yesterday a fifth man, Dalton 20-year-old Umare Aslam was charged with robbing and murdering Mr Singh on that date.

Four others, Muawaz Khalid, 20, of Blackmoorfoot Road, Crosland Moor, and three 17-year-old boys who cannot be named for legal reasons, have already appeared in court charged with murder and robbery and their provisional trial date is set for August 31.

Yesterday, people turned up at St Hilda’s Church, just 200 yards from the shop, to sign special books of condolence.

The books were opened on Sunday when hundreds packed into the church for a memorial service and more people added their signatures yesterday.

The Vicar of Bradley and Cowcliffe, Canon David Ward, said: “It was so busy on Sunday that many people could not sign the condolences book, so we opened up the church again to let them add their messages to the family.

“People from across the community want to show how much Mr Singh meant to them and we will then pass on the books to his family to show how people cared.”

A multi-faith event will take place in Huddersfield on Saturday following the tragic death of the shopkeeper, a highly respected member of the local community.

The gathering is to show solidarity in condemning the attack and to express sympathy to the Singh family and to all those affected by the events. The gathering is on Saturday at 7pm at the Hanfia Institute, a mosque at Bentley Street, Lockwood.
