TRAINEE hairdresser Tom Gilling has been named as the Kirklees and Calderdale Achiever of the Year for his commitment to learning.
Tom, 17, works at Mark Riley Hair Salons in Byram Street, Huddersfield, and Waterloo. He is a student at the new Calderdale College Hair Academy in Brighouse.
His award was a trophy and £150, presented at a ceremony in the Galpharm Stadium organised by West Yorkshire Learning Providers.
Tom is now eager to make a bid for the national title and prize of £1,500 at an event in March.
Tom, from Golcar, is a former student at Colne Valley High School. His ambition is to own his own salon.
He said: “My award was totally unexpected, a real shock. I feel this is only the beginning and I’m very determined to be successful in my chosen career.”
Hair Academy trainer Brett Oddy said: “All our trainees work hard.
“Tom, on the other hand, stands out because, after a difficult first six months he really knuckled down and made a vivid change.
“He has a nice way with customers and I’ve got high hopes for him.”
