DRIVERS who use short-stay car parking all day in Slaithwaite could cripple shops in the village, according to traders.
Kirklees councillor Dorothy Lindley said people should only use the car park in Carr Lane for short visits.
She believes people who work in the town are using the Carr Lane site instead of the long-stay car park in New Street and has urged them to stop.
She said: "These people probably do not realise the potential problems they are causing in Slaithwaite.
"I don't think they understand that people will see the short-stay is full and decide they might as well go to Huddersfield.
"It is vital that shops in Slaithwaite can compete, but if this small car park is clogged up all day they will struggle."
Clr Lindley, who has taken up the matter on behalf of local traders, said people were getting away with using the short-stay all day because there were not enough patrols, but asked drivers to do the traders a favour and not abuse the system.
"These shopkeepers cannot afford to lose out. There are some great little shops in Slaithwaite and it would be terrible to see them in trouble.
"Ideally there would be more spaces near the centre for people to use, but there is not much we can do about that."
