DAVID Blunkett resigned as Work and Pensions Secretary today.

His resignation from the Cabinet follows controversy over his business dealings.

His resignation had been expected after his appearance before a select committee of MPs this morning was cancelled.

Mr Blunkett had earlier arrived in Portcullis House, part of the House of Commons, for his appearance before the committee, but then took refuge from journalists in a private room.

He had been under pressure after breaking the ministerial code of conduct over paid work he took while he was out of Cabinet.

It is the second time Mr Blunkett has had to quit the Cabinet. He quit as Home Secretary in December, 2004.
