TROUTS are no longer in danger of being squashed by thirsty livestock.

Cows were crushing brown trout as they drank from a stream at Ingbirchworth Reservoir near Shepley.

Their hooves also stirred up the stream bed, which muddied the water making it less attractive as a spawning ground for the trout.

Yorkshire Water has installed a trough to keep the cows from the fish.

Spokesman Mike Tinsdeall said: “We hope that in time this will have a real impact on trout numbers in the area.”
