THE Mirfield-based Safe Anchor Trust has won a top award.

The charity, which was visited by The Princess Royal last week, won the award from the Waterways Trust and British Urban Regeneration Association.

The prize is in recognition of the Trust's community work.

The Safe Anchor Trust runs free narrowboat trips along the Calder and Hebble Navigation and other canals in West Yorkshire.

The trips are run by groups of volunteers and enable those more vulnerable members of the community to enjoy the waterways.

People with special needs, health or mobility problems are among those helped.

The group also aims to provide community service work for offenders who help maintain and improve towpaths and the waterside environment.

Last year the Safe Anchor Trust arranged free boat trips for 5,647 people.

It also obtained the equivalent of 12 full-time employees through partnerships.
