TWO people have been killed following a crash on the M62 this morning.
The crash, which happened at 6.30am, closed both carriageways and police say they will remain closed until this afternoon for investigations to take place.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "At around 6:30am today a HGV was travelling eastbound along the M62 between J27and 28 when for reasons unknown it lost control, passing through the central reservation and into the westbound carriageway.
"The HGV was subsequently in collision with a van and a mobile crane. Two people from the van have died as a result of the collision and two more have been seriously injured.
"The driver of the HGV has also been seriously injured and has been taken to LGI.
"Several other vehicles have been damaged and there are reports of a number of people with minor injuries.
"The M62 is closed in both directions and is likely to remain closed until the afternoon.
"Diversions are in place via the M621 though motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
"Enquiries into the collision are ongoing and any witnesses are being asked to contact the West Yorkshire Police Motorway Unit on 01924 292 915."
COMMUTERS using the M62 this morning are facing long delays after a lorry crashed through the central reservation.
The crash which happened before 7am saw an artic lorry go through the central reservation between Junction 27 Gildersome and Junction 28 Morley/White Rose.
Witnesses say the lorry, whose trailer detached in the impact, smashed into other vehicles and also hit a crane by the roadside.
There are believed to be three people seriously hurt in the incident.
Police and ambulance crews were on scene but were forced to close both carriageways.
The Highways Agency says the routes are not expected to be back to normal until midday.
Traffic is moving off the motorway onto other routes but this means other A roads such as the A62 Leeds road is very busy.
