AN ELDERLY woman had a lucky escape after a therapeutic wheat bag set fire to her bed.

The pensioner, thought to be in her 80s, managed to get out of bed at her bungalow on Scholey Road in Rastrick after noticing the bag had overheated.

She put it in some water and called the fire service as the bed started to smoulder shortly after midnight last night.

Firefighters from Brighouse and Elland attended the incident, carried the mattress and bedding outside, put the fire out and cleared the house of smoke.

The woman was unhurt.

Wheat bags can be warmed in a microwave to provide relief for aches and pains.

West Yorkshire Fire Service issued warnings about their use after Leeds woman Doreen Ghiloni, 82, died in May 2008 when one of the bags overheated and set fire to her bedding.
