TWO men were dragged to safety by firefighters from a flat fire in the early hours of this morning.

Watch manager Andy Blackburn of Huddersfield fire station said the prompt actions of people living in the complex in Trinity Street, Marsh had saved the men's lives.

Crews from Huddersfield and Elland attended the blaze which started in a ground floor flat of the four-storey building around 12.50am.

Fire investigators are still trying to find out the cause of the blaze which badly damaged the flat and smoke logged the rest of the building.

Watch manager Blackburn said two men in their 60s were treated at the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Both were rescued from the ground floor lobby area after being found in a collapsed state.

Occupants of the flats wakened the men and used a dry powder extinguisher to try and deal with the flames before fire crews arrived.

The Red Cross emergency support vehicle from Pudsey helped deal with emergency housing for the men overnight.

"There could have easily been fatalities in this fire. The quick thinking actions of the other residents in the bedsits and their attempts at tackling the fire helped saved lives," said watch manager Blackburn.

He said other residents were awakened by smoke alarms fitted in the property.

Fire crews will be visiting other homes in the Trinity Street area of the town today (Tuesday) offering free fire home safety checks and smoke detectors fitted.
