A NEW radio station hit Huddersfield airwaves this week.

Creative FM was launched on the 107.1FM frequency on Monday.

The station is being run by Beaumont Street Studios, a multimedia and music training facility.

Creative FM will be on air for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from July 11.

The broadcasts will be made by past and present BSS students.

They have all had experience of broadcasting pre-recorded and live shows once a month on the internet, via www.bssonair.co.uk

Station controller Kuldip Singh - himself a past BSS student - said the long broadcast would be a totally different challenge. It would feature more live broadcasting and will include shows from the Huddersfield Carnival and Mela in July.

Mr Singh said: "For some, it will be the first time they have done something like this live. Some people with more experience will have regular slots, but it will be a big challenge for everyone involved."

Creative FM programmes from 8am until 10pm feature a mix of music and talk shows, covering topics from community and cultural issues to interviews with local people.

There will also be programmes in Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati and Urdu.

From 10pm until 8am there is a mixture of pre-recorded music, from reggae and ska to rock, pop and R 'n' B.

Training manager Yvonne Gilbert said:

"It is a great way to build confidence. These are people who have maybe not been successful in formal education, or who live in disadvantaged circumstances.

"Yet a lot have gone on to make good careers because of the skills they have learned here."
