BOTTLE hunters tunnelling under the part of Batley cemetery that has not yet been used for burials are putting themselves and others in great danger.
That’s the warning from worried Kirklees Council officials.
Now, because of the illegal excavations, the council is stepping up security.
This will include random as well as routine visits and looking at using CCTV cameras.
Anyone caught illegally digging in the cemetery will have action taken against them.
Kirklees Cabinet member Clr Martyn Bolt said: “This is a very dangerous pastime.
“These enthusiasts are creating tunnels and caves in their pursuits and hunt for bottles.
“Not only are they putting themselves in danger, but also other people.
“Our workers use digging equipment, which could easily fall through from the surface.’’
