BRITAIN'S oldest national conservation group is supporting the campaign against wind turbines in Denby Dale.

The Open Spaces Society has joined local residents in trying to block plans for two turbines at Pool Hill, Kitchenroyd.

The application by Danish energy firm Alpha Wind will be discussed by Kirklees planners on January 5.

"The area is criss- crossed by public paths, which are much enjoyed by local people and visitors, who walk, ride and cycle here," said Kate Ashbrook, the society's general secretary.

"Their presence would severely degrade the attractive landscape and unspoilt rural character of the area."

Ms Ashbrook said the turbines would be close to the Kirklees Way, the Dearne Way and other popular routes.

People's quiet enjoyment of these paths and the surrounding countryside would be severely affected.

She praised local campaigners for forming the Residents Against Windfarm group and for fighting the plans.

The Society has submitted an objection to Kirklees Council's planning officer, which will be considered when it comes to committee.
