WIND farm protesters have hailed their first national conference a huge success.

More than 200 people heard environmentalist David Bellamy and Margaret Thatcher's former press secretary Sir Bernard Ingham speak out about the rush for wind power at the event at Saddleworth Civic Hall, Uppermill.

Clr Ken Hulme, the spokesman for Saddleworth Moors Action Group (Smag), who organised the event, said: "This conference represents the start of a national movement dedicated to protecting some of our most precious landscapes from the environmental damage caused by giant wind turbines."

Smag is fighting against plans to erect 50m-tall turbines just a few miles from Marsden.

David Bellamy called the turbines wind factories rather than wind farms.

Campaigners now plan to step up their fight.
