A CHURCH aiming to raise £105,000 for a refurbishment project is hosting an evening with a TV chef.

Elland’s Southgate Methodist Church wants to raise the money to fund the refurbishment of the town’s Christian Centre.

It has undergone some regeneration thanks to the hard work of the members, but they ran out of money before they could complete its entrance.

So to boost access they’re holding a series of fundraisers including a night with Elland and TV chef Brian Turner.

The Elland-born chef trained at the Savoy and worked at Claridge’s at the time head chef Richard Shepherd earned a Michelin star.

TV appearances include This Morning, Ready Steady Cook and his own BBC series Anything You Can Cook.

Church member Glenys Wadsworth said the event was part of their push to raise funds to complete the project: “The centre is used by the church and the community, we’ve boys and girls brigades, yoga classes, ladies meetings and we have regular blood donor clinics there too.

“We want to raise the money to make it more accessible for everyone and complete it.”

As part of the fundraising church and community members are holding barn dances, a jubilee concert next year with the Elland Male Voice Choir and they’re submitting applications for grants to fund the completion of the work.

To see Brian Turner demonstrate his culinary skills at Southgate Christian Centre on Saturday, September 24, at 7.30pm contact organisers on 01422 250108 for tickets which cost £20, with an early or late supper at 6pm or 9pm.
