CAMPAIGNERS were out in force in Holmfirth on Saturday calling for the demolition of a "terrible eyesore".

Members of the Holmfirth - Sort It! campaign rallied in support of the destruction of the abandoned Lodges supermarket.

The derelict store could be about to meet its maker after TV bosses shortlisted it to be knocked down for new Channel 4 show, Demolition.

A spokesman for the campaign said: "The huge ugly building spans and hides the town's pretty river from view and has stood empty for a shocking seven years and has broken windows and graffiti.

"It is an embarrassment and disgrace to everyone who loves `Compo's town'.

Holmfirth baker Greg Christofi said over the years they had been promised that work would proceed but nothing had happened.

He added: "It was an ugly building when it was built and now it's a danger to our health and safety with broken windows."

Trevor Ward, of Forward Developers, who have responsibility for the building, said there were other plans and there was no question of it being demolished.

It would be converted into a shopping mall and would have a facade more in keeping with Holmfirth.
