HUDDERSFIELD has again been named and shamed for TV licence-dodging.

For the second time in six months the town is among the top 10 worst areas for licence dodgers in the North.

The half-year league tables expose the towns where TV Licensing has caught numbers of people dodging the £121 annual fee.

Huddersfield ranked 10th in the tables, with 339 offenders caught between January and June this year.

But Sheffield held the top spot, with 3,115 dodgers caught, followed by Leeds with 2,522 and Bradford at 1,477.

Huddersfield was just 24 offenders behind York, which featured ninth.

Throughout the North, 13, 914 people were caught in the first six months of the year.

TV Licensing spokes- woman Deborah Copeland said: "This shows that people are not getting away with trying to dodge the law.

"In fact, nationwide evasion is estimated to be at a record low of 5.7%.

"However, it's disappointing that those determined to break the law continue to give Huddersfield a bad name, especially as the honest majority do pay the licence fee," she added.

"Evaders should remember that we have a database of 28m addresses.

"It records whether properties are licensed or unlicensed and our officers and detector vans focus on those properties which have no record of a TV licence."

Anyone who is caught risks an appearance in court and a fine of up to £1,000 and court costs - and they still have to get a licence.

Ms Copeland added: "It's for their benefit, as well as the good name of their town, that they buy a licence today."

People can pay their licence fee a variety of ways.

People on income support can make weekly payments of as little of £5 at any post office, using Cash Easy Entry. Call 08457 289 289.
