They're going ghost-hunting at Oakwell Hall.

Oakwell Hall, one of Kirklees’ most popular museums, is to feature on the popular paranormal television series ‘Most Haunted’ this week.

And the TV ghosthunters will be aiming to “capture” the ghost of Capt William Batt.

Presenter Yvette Fielding and a production crew from the Really channel show visited the historic house earlier in the year to try to track down evidence of the house’s ghost.

Senior Heritage Officer Eric Brown was filmed talking about the legend of William Batt who owned the house in 1684.

He was a bachelor of 25 and his widowed mother, Elizabeth, lived at Oakwell.

The story goes that there was a knock on the door and when a servant opened it, there stood Captain William Batt. He strode through the hall and up the stairs to his room – where he vanished.

Later it was discovered that William had been killed in a duel in London that very same afternoon of December 9, 1684. The legend also states that he left a bloody footprint behind in a bedroom.

William was buried in Birstall on December 30, 1684.

The story is one that has delighted ghost-hunters before.

Jenny Bryant, of Gcuk Paranormal Ghost Hunting Events, has organised visits to Oakwell in the past.

She said: “It’s brilliant news that the TV company have been in. I’m sure people will be intrigued”.

It’s also not the first time Oakwell has featured on TV; the house was used as one of the sets for the mysterious drama “Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell”, which has been screened over the last few weeks.

Did ‘Most Haunted’ discover evidence to support the story or any other ghostly occurrences?

“You will just have to watch and find out,” commented Eric.

‘Most Haunted’ will be aired at 10pm on Thursday, July 23.
