VILLAGERS are being asked for their ideas to make Marsden and Slaithwaite even more vibrant and wealthy.

Kirklees Council staff want to draw up a business plan for both villages stretching to 2024.

Suggestions from the public over the next six months will form the foundations for schemes covering subjects such as traffic and transport, housing, tourism, the environment and business opportunities.

The 20-year project would capitalise on the tens of millions of pounds of investment injected into the area over the past few years.

That cash has been focused particularly around the reopened Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Judith Atkinson, from GVA Grimley Consultants, of Leeds, who have been charged with carrying out the survey, said: "Both villages have a great deal of assets.

"The challenge is to understand how to deal with those assets, going into the future in a sensitive and appropriate way. What sort of Colne Valley do people want to see in 10 to 20 years?"

Maggie Mellor, a senior regeneration officer with Kirklees, said the apparent wealth of the villages hid pockets of need.

The first consultation is on Saturday, July 10. Between 9am and 2pm people will be able to give their views at Marsden Mechanics Hall.

Between 2pm and 6pm, ideas can be handed in at Colne Valley Leisure Centre in Slaithwaite.
