TWINS Rachel and Sophie Meachen do everything together.

But Rachel has one record Sophie has just missed out on – a 100% attendance at school.

Rachel has never missed a day at Kirkheaton Primary School since she and twin sister Sophie started aged four.

The 11-year-old has now become the first pupil to achieve 100% attendance at the Kirkheaton school.

Sophie narrowly missed out on the full attendance certificate after missing just one day of school each year.

Proud mum Gill Meachen, a teaching assistant at the school, said: “Right from day one, they have both loved school.

“It’s never been a problem getting them to go in everyday and they really do enjoy it.

“I first thought about Rachel’s full attendance when they were in year four and I remember saying to her then that I’d be surprised if she managed to get all the way through school without being poorly.

“There are so many bugs going round nowadays so I can’t believe she hasn’t needed a single day off.

“Sophie has only ever needed a day here and there due to a few coughs and colds, so she’s only just missed out on it.

“Towards the end Rachel, really didn’t want to miss a single day and she is as proud as punch now she has 100% attendance.

“Sophie is a bit gutted in a way, but she won’t hold a grudge for it and she’ll be happy for her sister.”

Staff at the New Road school have checked available attendance registers and believe that Rachel is the first pupil to never miss a day of school.

Mrs Meachen added: “We went back as far as we could and there isn’t anybody else we could find.

“It really is something for her to be very proud of.”

Rachel was awarded with a certificate and book token to mark her achievement during her last school assembly.

Ironically, as soon as Rachel left the school, she came down with a cough which blighted the first week of her summer holiday.

But she is now determined to take her full attendance record on to high school, where sister Sophie is hoping to make her mark on the register too.

They will both start at King James’s High School, Almondbury, in September.
